10-year-old is a ‘great example of resilience’

October 11—This week, The Arthritis Foundation is calling on local and area residents to support their goal to stop arthritis by participating in the inaugural 2022 Walk to Cure Arthritis on Saturday, October 15 at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Albuquerque.

For local citizens, it’s a great way to support a great cause.

“Well, it’s always nice to feel that community support and to have a sense of camaraderie with people who may be going through the same issues,” said Shelly Jordan, CEO of the Arthritis Foundation. “So just to see that you’re not alone, and to see that there are other people who love you and support you and work to improve people’s quality of life.”

The foundation is committed to supporting the search for better treatments and a cure, as well as providing tools and resources to help reduce chronic pain and improve people’s lives.

This year, 10-year-old Jocelyn Proa is being honored after battling childhood inflammatory arthritis.

“We are thrilled to have her as our first-ever winner,” said Jordan. “She’s a great sweetie.”

Jocelyn was diagnosed with JIA after showing symptoms similar to growing pains that would require her to need a walker to get around. After further tests, rheumatologists confirmed she had JIA.

In 2021, Jocelyn started taking medication and responded well to her treatment plan, and she was able to return to her favorite hobbies.

“So she’s back to doing all the things she loves to do, like karate and swimming,” Jordan said. “She’s just a really great example of resilience and one of the 300,000 kids across the country who actually have childhood arthritis, which isn’t very well known.”

Local residents can register and start fundraising for the New Mexico Walk to Cure Arthritis, and learn more about the event by visiting walktocurearthritis.org/newmexico or contacting Jordan at [email protected] org.

“Arthritis is the number one cause of disability in the United States, affecting nearly 60 million Americans, including 300,000 children. Together, we can make a difference for these arthritis warriors,” Jordan said in A press release.
