Pune: A Pune zilla parishad primary school at Kardelwadi in Shirur taluka, about 60 km from the city, run by two teachers, has been open every day of the year for over 20 years.
Students have performed well in scholarships and other competitions over the years and the quality of education here has gone beyond district boundaries to elicit the deep appreciation of a team from the National Council for Education Research and Training (NCERT) during his visit in early March. .
Where the rural school has large learning gaps, the team found that students in this school were able to read and write well even before entering Std I.
Assistant professor at NCERT Vishal Pajankar, who was part of the visiting team, said the school was a good example for others in the country.
Detailed research on how it works, best practices, and how they achieved such a feat could be emulated.
Pajankar, “At a time when we report school dropout every year, this school has set an example by drawing students every day of the year. Teachers have made commendable efforts for the overall development of students.
According to NCERT, the objectives of the study were to examine the role and functions of teachers in planning and implementing various activities, teaching-learning processes and supporting community members, parents and former students. The study will be conducted for 20-30 days by the team now. Another team is due to visit in April.
When teacher Dattaraya Sakat joined the school in 2001, infrastructure was poor, school standards poor, and village students barely showed up for class. Sakat then decided to create an academic environment and bring the students back.
“I felt that apart from studies, there were many other activities that students could be interested in, such as gardening, sports, watching movies and fun games. I introduced them and we saw that the children of the village participated enthusiastically. Slowly the news spread among the other children and they started coming on the weekends for these activities. Soon, the number of registrations, which was barely a few dozen at the time, increased to 110 today.
Sakat’s next step was to improve the quality of education. The children were introduced to the audiovisual medium with content he developed. There was color, music, and graphics that made the concepts easier to understand.
