Why are the two young women who finished #1 and #2 for their trials not recognized by the public? Why are their essays not published? It was supposed to showcase and celebrate young women. Congratulations to you two. You deserve better! Does a #3 essay get that much publicity? Maybe there are ulterior motives?

LC BELTER

(After the reaction to the third-place winner, the authors of the top two entries might just want to stay out of the public eye.)

IT SUCKS (NOT)

After finishing breakfast and removing the shards from my mouth the other day, I wondered why these wooden utensils were being imposed on us. As I was frustrated, realizing that these plastic replacements that cost more and produce more CO2 emissions to manufacture are just another example of this federal government’s strategy of symbolism over pragmatism, I thought that I should just drink a glass of orange juice and calm down. Unfortunately, my soggy paper straw had already folded up like a cheap tent.

AL WILLEY

(The irony is not lost on us.)

POLICE OURSELVES

Forgive me for being suspicious of the RCMP union poll that 55% of Albertans want to keep the RCMP. The time has come for Alberta to have its own police force, made up of Albertans. Albertans, through our tax dollars, have already paid for the equipment, vehicles and real estate used by the RCMP. Therefore, everything should be transferred to the Alberta Provincial Police. If Jason Kenney had implemented at least this recommendation from the Fair Deal Panel, he would have remained our UCP leader.

RON QUIGLEY

(We suggest that the OPP is not a concern for most people.)

WRONG NUMBER

Re: Blacklisted Alexander Graham Bell. The Monuments Board of Canada has blacklisted Alexander Graham Bell for opinions and ideas he had more than 150 years ago. Are you kidding me? The man died 100 years ago. It didn’t matter what he thought at the time. Moreover, it was probably the norm. They also blacklisted sites such as the Halifax Citadel and Crowsnest Pass for their links to colonialism and patriarchy. Do these people have nothing better to do than diminish our whole history. Let’s put in place a federal government that will eliminate this council for its offensive behavior and actions towards the history of our country. Enough is enough!

MOLLY KENS

(People have changed dramatically over the past 100 years.)

TOO POLITICAL

Re: ‘TEACHERS OFFSIDE’, letters, 12 Aug. It’s a shame what the ATA has become under Jason Schilling. It’s not about the kids anymore. It’s about politics. He should retire and run as an NDP candidate. Then he might see what Albertans (minus the golden pensions) think of him. The ATA was once the children’s champion. Now they are just another political pressure group. Just wait for the NDP campaign to start in the classroom – and teachers, don’t tell me that’s not happening.

RAY STEVENSON

(It’s a toxic relationship.)
