Brandi Carlile realized that by thinking about Loretta Lynnof Lynn’s life and legacy as one of country music’s most legendary pioneers, she couldn’t pay tribute to Lynn without acknowledging two other iconic artists: Tanya Tucker and Wynonna Judd.

Lynn, who passed away peacefully at her Tennessee ranch Tuesday morning (October 4), “always had time” for Tucker and Judd. These two artists are now “heroes and friends” to Carlile, and they treat her the same way Lynn treated them. Carlile shared the values Lynn instilled in a heartfelt Instagram caption:

“It occurred to me today, as I contemplated the loss of our dear and powerful Loretta Lynn, that when she was a younger woman and already a legend, she treated these two women (and many others) as they treat me now… I am thinking today of Loretta’s family and her many close friends, but I am also thinking of my heroes and friends [Tanya Tucker] and [Wynonna Judd] as well.

“She always had time for Tanya and Wynonna. She always had a kind word for them and wisdom like wildfire. I’ve only met ‘Retty’ with Tanya a few times, but today more than never, i realize that [Loretta Lynn] set an example for women in country music that is felt through the ages. She will never leave as long as those she cared for continue to give all her love and care to the younger generations…and I know they will.

“Thank you Loretta for treating my heroes so special and thank you Tanya and Wy for making me feel the way she made you feel. I’m sorry you lost your amazing friend 💔💪🏼”

Carlile’s heartfelt sentiment rang true with many others in the country music community and beyond. Actress Kathy Najimi greeted poet Carlile. country star Martina McBride said it was “so true” and “part of his legacy is the kindness and mentorship that we’ve all felt. His legacy and our duty and privilege is to pass it on. ❤️” Monarch actress Beth Same commented, “It’s so heartfelt and touching. I’ve always always wanted to meet Loretta Lynn. She’s got that southern peasant wisdom, that turn of phrase, that sharp wit that’s so unique to southerners. Like my grandmother Same. Like my mother, my aunts, my sister. We lost a precious vessel today. But her spirit is still whirling in the ether. Bless her family and friends. 2022 has struck again. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ ❤️❤️❤️❤️”

Tucker and Judd each shared emotional messages to pay tribute to Lynn. Tucker wrote a heartbreaking caption on Instagram, saying his “world has changed and will never be the same” after losing his “hero”. Judd looked back on memories with Lynn throughout her life and considered her family: “Loretta was like an aunt to me. I called her and she told me stories. Some of my fondest memories of Loretta come from telling me about her life at Butcher Holler.

Lynn’s family said in a statement Tuesday: “Our precious mom, Loretta Lynn, passed away peacefully this morning, October 4th, in her sleep at home on her beloved ranch in Hurricane Mills.” The family requested confidentiality and noted that a public announcement would follow with Lynn’s memorial details.
