Charles promises to follow Queen’s lead – myGC.com.au

King Charles told the UK parliament he was ‘determined to follow faithfully’ the example set by his mother, Queen Elizabeth, addressing MPs and peers in what he described as ‘the living and breathing instrument of our democracy”.

In a ceremony at Westminster Hall, the oldest building on the parliamentary estate, Charles used his address to the Upper and Lower Houses of Parliament to pay tribute to his mother and pledge to uphold the principle of constitutional government.

“From a very young age, Her late Majesty pledged herself to serve her country and her people and to uphold the precious principles of constitutional government which are at the heart of our nation. This vow she kept with unparalleled dedication,” said he told MPs and peers gathered on Monday.

“She set an example of selfless duty which, with God’s help and your guidance, I am resolved to follow faithfully.

“As Shakespeare says of Queen Elizabeth, she was ‘a role model for all living princes’.”

The Queen died at her home on Sunday Thursday, triggering a period of national mourning in which tens of thousands of Britons are expected to pay their respects.

At the ceremony in Westminster Hall, when the Speakers of the House of Lords and House of Commons offered their condolences to the new King, Charles also paid tribute to Parliament as a ‘living, breathing instrument of our democracy’ .

“As I stand before you today, I cannot help but feel the weight of history that surrounds us and reminds us of vital parliamentary traditions, to which members of both Houses dedicate themselves with such commitment staff for the good of all of us. ”
