Antonio Conte sees the union between Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp as an example to follow, explaining how his counterpart for the Tottenham Hotspur game on Sunday has strived to improve his club.

Tottenham welcome Liverpool to north London on Sunday in what looks to be an intriguing game. Conte’s side move there six places above the Reds in the Premier League table. They have won 10 points more than Liverpool so far, from one game more.

In Merseyside, there has been some pressure. Klopp hasn’t been able to inspire the same type of form that Liverpool would usually expect this season.

So maybe Tottenham could have the advantage on this occasion. However, despite current doubts over Klopp and Liverpool, Conte still believes they have shown a good example of how to stick with a manager and support him.

Conte told a Klopp press conference: “The relationship is normal. His story is about him, he changed Liverpool.

“I remember very well, Liverpool didn’t win for a long time and it took four years to get Liverpool to win again. It shows how important it is for a manager to have time.

“If people don’t know football, they think this coach’s story is a winner, it’s not. Jurgen shows that through work, games and the transfer market he has improved Liverpool a lot and brought them to the top.

“Of course I can speak well of Jurgen and Liverpool and the players. They are definitely a good example for us.

Conte’s comments are interesting when put into the perspective of his own situation. His future with Tottenham is unclear as he celebrates a year in his role as head coach with the club.

Known to be a demanding manager in the transfer market, for example, he will want assurances about the project Spurs are building if he wants to commit beyond this season.

For now, he has to focus on their next games, starting with the Liverpool game. Spurs will, however, be without some important players.

Conte explained: “We have these injuries and I can confirm that Richarlison is not available for the game.

” It is the same for [Cristian] Romero but [Rodrigo] Bentancur is much better. Today he was part of the training session. It was the same for [Dejan] Kulusevski, today he had half a training session with us.

“The problem is that Lucas Moura has different faces for his tendon pain. Today he was really bad and he told me he was really worried about it but I ask him to try to be available because we need it. Also Sonny [Heung-min] you know is having surgery.

Conte explains Bentancur’s belief

One of the players mentioned by Conte, Bentancur, was further discussed during the press conference.

The midfielder has been much better for Tottenham than he was for Juventus since his transfer in January 2021. Conte, however, believes he can achieve even higher status.

The Italian added: “Rodrigo has only one problem in my opinion. He has the real possibility to be really, really top, top, but you know that to become a top player you have to want it and decide.

“During the last period, I think Rodrigo has played exceptionally well, and he’s a player who gives us a lot on the pitch, off the pitch, and we’re talking about a player who shows the possibility of to be one of the best, the best midfielders, one of the best midfielders in the world.

“But you know how to be a good player and then the top is the difficulty. When you’re average, becoming good isn’t that hard. The difference is being good at the top.

“I think he has everything and has the great potential to be a top midfielder. For this reason I push him. I push him every day, during training because he has this quality to become. Also Pierre Hojbjerg, he is making great progress if we compare last season and this season.
