Edda Wind takes delivery of a hydrogen-ready CSOV

Haugesund, Norway, offshore wind service company Edda Wind (OSL:EWIND), headquartered in Haugesund, announces that it has taken delivery of its first CSOV, the Hydrogen Ready System Edda Breeze. The vessel is the first to be delivered under the company’s nine-vessel construction program.

“The delivery of Edda Breeze marks the start of deliveries for our nine-vessel construction program. More importantly, we have already secured long-term contracts for the first four new builds. Therefore, each vessel delivery means increased revenue and improved profitability for Edda Wind,” says Kenneth Walland, CEO of Edda Wind.

HYDROGEN READY

Built at the Astilleros Gondán shipyard in Spain, along 88.3 meters Edda Breeze is of Salt 0217 design and can accommodate 120 people on board. It has been designed with flexibility and operability that will allow it to serve wind farms around the world.

With funding from the Norwegian government’s Enova SF program, the vessel has also been prepared for zero-emissions operations with hydrogen as the energy carrier in the form of Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC). The LOHC concept was adopted by Edda Wind because it meets the company’s strict criteria for operational safety, logistics solutions and endurance. For example, he says, this way of managing hydrogen on board avoids exposure to the safety risks that exist for many other green fuel solutions.

Edda Breeze is the first CSOV in the world prepared with a hydrogen-based energy system designed for a four-week autonomy. In principle, this means that this ship, in a few years, will be able to support the construction and commissioning of wind farms without generating carbon emissions,” explains Walland.

Edda Broken is of design Salt 0217 and construction number C489 from Atilleros Gondán, the same shipyard that delivered Edda Passat and Edda Mistral in 2018.

In addition to Edda Breeze and the eight vessels – six CSOVs and two Service Operations Vessels (SOVs) – currently on order, Edda Wind owns and operates two SOVs, Edda Passat and Edda Mistral, both of which are chartered to Ørsted on UK offshore wind farms. In total, Edda Wind’s fleet will consist of 11 ships.

In addition, Edda Wind operates a chartered lead vessel, the Edda Fjord. He started the Ocean Breeze contract in April 2021 and will operate until replaced by Edda Breeze.

“Operators are constantly looking for ways to improve the efficiency of wind farm operations and reduce operating costs and environmental footprint,” says Walland. “Our purpose-built offshore wind service vessels provide just that. We expect demand for specialist service vessels to improve, and we are well positioned to capitalize on this trend.
