FERRIES 2021: Update of a fleet of ferries with hybrid technology

New Casco Bay Lines Ferry to Showcase ABB’s Electric Hybrid Power and Propulsion Solutions

This year’s presentation from Marine Log’s FERRIES conference is now less than two months away.

The event will take place November 9-10 on the New York Harbor waterfront in Jersey City, NJ, in partnership with the Passenger Vessel Association. As its theme says, “The Ferry Industry Is About to Bounce Back in 2022”.

This year’s program includes a hybrid technology presentation with a real-life example from Casco Bay Island Transit District, based in Portland, Maine, also known as Casco Bay Lines. Hank Berg, Managing Director and CEO of Casco Bay, will discuss how the company updated the transit district fleet with a hybrid solution for a new ferry designed by Elliott Bay Design Group.

During his presentation, the audience will learn:

  • Why, after conducting an extensive propulsion selection study that looked at systems ranging from mechanical diesel to all-electric, Casco Bay Lines chose to go ahead with a hybrid-electric passenger / vehicle ferry;
  • Where the 599 passenger, 15 vehicle ferry is being designed;
  • Why were ABB’s onshore propulsion and recharging stations incorporated into the project during the design phase to help mitigate any risk?
  • How the new 164-foot ferry can run on diesel-electric or battery-powered zero-emission mode – and is expected to reduce 800 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year; and more.


Berg joined the Casco Bay Island Transit District in January 2010. Prior to joining Casco Bay Lines, he spent nine years with Taction, a leading customer service contact center based in Maine, serving as President , COO and CFO. During his tenure.

Berg also worked for over 20 years in the high tech industry at Transcept, a start-up, and Sanders, a Lockheed Martin company.

He grew up in mid-coast Maine and holds a bachelor’s degree in electronics engineering, a master’s degree in computer engineering, and an executive MBA from Boston University.


The venue, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking ferry traffic on the Hudson River, is a short ferry ride from New York.

Marine Log has partnered with the Passenger Vessel Association (PVA) to plan what will be the industry’s first live event in 18 months.

In addition to two days of in-person discussions and dynamic question-and-answer sessions, the event will provide plenty of networking opportunities.

Over the next few years, the ferry industry is expected to experience rapid growth and innovation. The collaboration between Marine Log and PVA enables the two organizations to share industry knowledge and resources in support of the ferry industry at this critical juncture.

As always, the program will focus on lessons learned from hard-earned real-life experience. In addition, the program will explore new ways to achieve economic and environmental goals through technological advancements, innovative approaches to vessel operations and the latest trends in ferry design.


A highlight of this year’s event will be an in-person visit to the first of three new Ollis Class ferries delivered to New York Harbor this fall for the Staten Island Ferry Division of the New City Department of Transportation. York (NYCDOT). The ferries, designed by Elliott Bay Design Group in Seattle, Washington, were built by the Eastern Shipbuilding Group shipyard in Florida.

Conference attendees will benefit from a guided tour of the ship’s wheelhouse, engine room and passenger areas.

NYCDOT will also allow guests to explore its full mission pilothouse simulator. Designed as a faithful reproduction of the Ollis-class cockpit, the simulator features the same Furuno radars and Transas ECS units as the ferries.

A question-and-answer session will conclude the tour on the ferry saloon deck before returning to the hotel for the remainder of the conference.
