Harvey Gulf operates PSV on RLNG

Coming one step closer to becoming the world’s first operator of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) certified oil and gas vessels, Harvey Gulf International Marine of New Orleans, Louisiana has begun operating one of its tri-fuel vessels run exclusively on battery electricity and renewable liquefied natural gas (LNG), with diesel fuel as backup.

Harvey explains that the RLNG he uses is “pig and dairy farm gas recovered from pigs and cows” and that the use of RLNG allows customers who charter the company’s dual- and tri-fuel RLNG vessels to achieve carbon neutral certification for their ship-related operations. .

“We always knew the day would come when investors and customers demanded low-carbon or, in this case, carbon-neutral, zero-emission platform supply vessels,” said Shane Guidry, President. – CEO of Harvey Gulf. “Harvey has the only ones in the world in operation today and the only ones that will ever operate in the United States, unless our competitors want to build new dual-fuel LNG ships, or tri-fuel like these, at a cost of 113 million per vessel I don’t see that happening because you will never get an end user day rate that will support the Construction cost of $113 million.

“Today we have five 310ft platform supply vessels which can all operate in a carbon neutral manner using renewable liquefied natural gas. So for oil companies that really want to do all they can to reduce emissions when drilling for oil, we have boats they can now charter to meet the needs of drilling rigs while burning fuel. carbon neutral.

The carbon-neutral RLNG used on board the Harvey vessels is a low-carbon-intensity (CI) biomethane blend sourced from the swine and dairy industries. The natural methane produced from the waste/co-products of these sectors is recovered via digesters. The treatment of waste and the extraction of methane results in a negative carbon intensity (CI) noted as renewable gas.

“Through blending in our LNG refueling terminal (the only one in America),” says Harvey, “we can achieve net carbon neutral fuel consumption where, with a low CI score, RLNG is blended with available LNG locally. An example would be to blend locally sourced LNG with a CI score of +80LNG with RLNG with a CI score of -440, the net zero blend would be at a ratio of 5.5:1. Thanks to this type of innovative thinking process, the company is able to continue to support its customers in respecting their environmental commitments.


Harvey also announced that it has ordered 25 electric Ford F-150 Lightning trucks for its employee fleet. All will replace existing combustion engine vehicles and will be used to support the company’s vessel operations and efforts to continue down the path to decarbonization.
