As Javed Akhtar turned 77 today, his son Farhan Akhtar shared a sweet message for him. The father-son duo have worked together in films such as Dil Chahta Hai, Lakshya, Rock On!! and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Javed Akhtar’s illustrious career began modestly in the 1970s. At the time, screenwriters rarely received credit. He and Salim Khan popularly known as Salim-Javed have risen to prominence over the years delivering iconic blockbuster films such as Zanjeer, Deewar and Sholay. These movies were a complete entertainment package. They had emotion, action and drama.

Javed Akhtar’s words have the ability to pierce your heart. He gave us unforgettable lyrics in songs such as Tumko Dekha Toh Yeh Khayal Aaya, Ek Ladki Ko Dekha and Do Pal Ruka Khwabon Ka Karvan among others. Such deep words, timeless tunes!

Javed Akhtar weaves magic with his words and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is a prime example. His poignant lines about love, loss and life were the backbone of film by Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol, Farhan Akhtar. Although we were moved by the story, what resonated in our minds long after seeing the film were the words of Javed Akhtar.

These hauntingly beautiful words are enough to captivate anyone: “Dilon mein tum apni betaabiyan leke chal rahe ho toh zinda ho tum. Nazar mein khwabon ki bijliyan leke chal rahe ho toh zinda ho tum. Hawa ke jhokon ke jaise aazad rehna sikho, tum ek dariya ke jaise lehron mein behna sikho, Har ek lamhe se tum milo khole apni bhaayein, har ek pal ek naya sama dekhe ye nigahein. Jo apni aankhon mein hairaniyan leke chal rahe ho toh zinda ho tum. Dilon mein tum apni betaabiyan leke chal rahe ho toh zinda ho tum.

Here is another that proves the genius of Javed Akhtar: “Jab jab dard ka baadal chaya, jab ghum ka saya lehraya, jab aansoo palkon tak aya, jab ye tanha dil ghabraya, humne dil ko yeh samjhaya Dil aakhir tu kyun rota hai, duniya mein yunhi hota hai. Yeh jo gehre sannate hain, waqt ne sabko hi baante hain. Thoda ghum hai sabka qissa, thodi dhoop hai sabka hissa. Aankh teri bekaar hi nam hai, har pal ek naya mausam hai. Kyun tu aise pal khota hai, Dil aakhir tu kyun rota hai. Let it flow!

Javed Akhtar has won five National Film Awards, the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan for his contribution to the cinematic world. We say his legacy will endure, that his words will continue to break our hearts and heal our wounds at the same time.
