What’s good: Everyone is in a closet of their own suffering and self beyond their sexualities. The film captures this in the most intriguing way.

What’s wrong : He fails to open that closet and let the inner catharsis take center stage. It’s more about showing jealousy than lust, which is much more poetic.

Toilet break: If you decide to watch it, you can choose to pause and pick one up.

Watch or not? : You can give it a chance, because it’s not a bad movie, it’s just a wasted chance.

Language: English.

Available on: Amazon Prime Video.

Duration: 113 Minutes.

My Policeman Movie Review: Script Analysis

It’s 1957 London where even owning your sexuality on top of being straight was a crime. Amid gay atrocities, a couple became embroiled in a triangle based on jealousy and agony. The idea of My Policeman is noble and very moving on paper and the agony translates to screen as well, but the poetry needed to make it all that much more engaging is lacking. Let’s dissect.

Based on the book by Bathen Roberts, adapted for the screen by Ron Nyswaner My Policeman definitely has a heart and for the most part it still beats really hard. There is a man who hides his sexual identity, another who still does not know exactly what his inclination is and when they meet, there are sparks that fly. The best part of the film is the way it deals with Patrick and his dilemma that doesn’t connect him to the world around him or even separate him entirely, but hangs in the balance.

The essence of the time is pretty well captured where men in love are arrested and treated like criminals. The world despises them as if they were monsters. But in the attempt to speak to a natural yet taboo love dynamic, the film forgets to treat its characters like humans and give them deep catharsis at all times. Like yes, they are in love, now we have a wife and the dynamic is threatened. But the mess is never shown in a way that ends up affecting the viewer. Everything is very superficial and quick to make changes from point to point.

All of this steals the poetry of a film that has all the potential to have it. Because there’s enough pain and tragedy to make it beautiful and painful. But the creators choose instead not to focus on it and simply point out the jealousy that exists between the three. You feel the void of a poetic undertone when, in court, the lawyer calls Tom “My Policeman” while reading Patrick’s diary and it kind of strikes a chord with you. If you want an example, look at the work of Pablo Larraín (Spencer) where he almost makes his characters dance through their stories. He needed this treatment.

Movie Review My Policeman: Star Performance

Harry Styles as Tom Opposed to Negative Buzz isn’t bad. Although he’s just above average, it’s not like you can’t stand his act. There’s still a long way to go, but it’s definitely a small step in the right direction. He manages to be good at the parts where he’s supposed to be a muse.

The winner of My Policeman is undoubtedly David Dawson who brings the aforementioned dilemma to life in the most moving way. He’s the only character who happens to have a life beyond the three main actors and layers more than a 3-point role.

He is followed by Gina McKee, who plays the old Marion and is the one who connects all the dots in this story. The young version played by Emma Corrin does not have much to do apart from what we have already seen her do.

Review of the film My Policeman: direction, music

Michael Grandage’s direction opens My Policeman with lots of aspirations and settings that have a lot going for them but still have a very present void. But that fades in the first 20 minutes and things get monotonous and too fast.

The music helps immerse the viewer, but it stops when the script chooses to run and not breathe.

Review of My Policeman: The Last Word

The Harry Styles star has the potential to be an immersive film, but it chooses to stay on the surface. This is a poorly exploited opportunity.
