PBA News: Maverick Ahanmisi Leads by Example at Converge: Aldin Ayo

AS Converge went through a period of transition after hiring Aldin Ayo as their new coach, one of the players who did very well in adapting was Maverick Ahanmisi.

The seven-year veteran is the team’s leading home scorer averaging 15 points in four games in the 2022-23 PBA Commissioner’s Cup. His clutch baskets in Converge’s last outing against Meralco sealed a 106-99 victory last Saturday.

Ahead of the conference, Ayo said Ahanmisi joined the Converge buildup late, but was pleasantly surprised to see him fit.

“Mav has always been very consistent since day one,” Ayo said at the start of this talk. “He arrived late for our training, but I was surprised to think that he was late due to an extended holiday. But when he came to our training, he was the one who was really in good shape.

Ayo eventually learned that Ahanmisi was one of the players he needed for the fast game he wanted for Converge.

“His game matches our system. He continues to run and the good thing is that he makes the best decisions. He’s one of our veterans. We expect him to,” Ayo said.

Ayo said Ahanmisi, 31, was leading by example.

“Crucial role kasi ‘yung niya na, he is one of the veterans. Marami kasing mga recruits at maraming bata. Si Mav kasi, during practice and especially during play, pinapakita lang niya kung ano ang kailangan gawin, especially in a crucial situation,” Ayo said.

As a leader, Ahanmisi said he’s already seeing progress, especially in the closing matches after their losses to Magnolia and Bay Area. Against Meralco, Converge lost a 22-point lead, but eventually escaped with the win, 106-99.

“It shows our character and our composure along the way. The last two games, we couldn’t finish those games. We really wanted to focus on that,” Ahanmisi said, referring to the win over Meralco.
