Paul Simpson says the way Manchester City will try to respond to a setback is the perfect example of this (Image: PA/Ben Holmes)
Paul Simpson has challenged his Carlisle United side to be like Manchester City in how they aim to respond to a setback today.
The Blues take on Leyton Orient in League Two this afternoon (Brunton Park, 3pm) with Simpson looking to improve after the midweek defeat at Barrow.
And the United boss says his players need look no further than the Premier League champions for the kind of ruthless attitude needed.
“The big challenge for me is if we’re a good team, we’ll react in the right way,” Simpson said.
“My example that I gave to the players is Manchester City. They are a good team. They lost last weekend [to Liverpool]and if they are as good as they think they are, they will react in the right way.
“And we have to. I am not for a moment comparing us to Manchester City. But we have to react positively.
“It starts with a very good game against Orient.”

Simpson is hoping Jack Stretton and Corey Whelan can be involved today after ankle injuries, while Kristian Dennis and Fin Back are expected to return.
Carlisle could take third place with the win today as they put their nine-game unbeaten streak on the line against second-placed Richie Wellens’ Os.
Simpson says neutrals will expect the high-flying Orient to win today.
And he said a Carlisle victory would open some eyes outside the club.
“It will be a game to talk about,” he said.
“If Orient win the game, everyone will expect it because no one expected us to be up there.
“We have to make sure we surprise a few people. That’s the only thing I’m thinking about – make sure we get the performance right.
“I don’t think it will surprise us, but it might surprise a few people outside of our football club.”
Tuesday’s 2-0 Papa John’s Trophy defeat at Barrow saw Simpson criticized for the performance as well as his own preparation.
He said the players responded in the right way to his post-match words.
“It was very good. We talked about what puts us in the league position that we are in, and I said that during this season I probably made mistakes before Tuesday, just like the players.
“But the players were able to cover all the little mistakes you make, and sometimes I can cover the mistakes the players made.
“We were able to do it because we were together to have a team mentality.
“We have to get back to it, simple as that.”
