What to expect from UPSC Mains Essay?

By on January 7, 2022 0

Today, January 7, is the first day of the Hands Exam by the Union Civil Service Commission (UPSC). UPSC Mains will take place on the following dates – January 7, 8, 9, 10, 15 and 16.

The first paper is the test paper, which holds 250 marks. Free Press Journal spoke with some experts in the field for some advice for the paper and the formula for writing the essay and the scoring model.

The Academic Director of Elite IAS Delhi Academy, Mr. Arpit Adlakha, said, “As part of the essay, you have to write two essays on four topics. Each essay should be 1,000 to 1,200 words long. The subjects that UPSC requests are based on current events. He cited a few examples to make it clearer.

In 2015, APJ Abdul Kalam passed away. UPSC asked a question based on a quote from him.

In 2016, the GST was introduced. UPSC then framed a topic around it.

In the same year, there was a conflict between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka over the Kaveri River. UPSC requested this as well.

Hot topics for this year may be as follows

  1. India health system

  2. Cross 100 crore of vaccinations

  3. Agricultural laws

  4. India’s position globally

In addition, there could be topics based on statements. Candidates can be given single lines or a sentence, and they must write an essay based on them. In 2019, a section was dedicated to statement-based questions. “However, they will only be part of a larger section this year,” the experts informed.

Hot topics for this year may be as follows-

  1. Story

  2. Ethics

  3. Philosophy

  4. Arts, culture

Apart from these, UPSC also covers technological, scientific, ethical, environmental and political fields.

How to write a better essay?

The essay should be more informative than creative and should be properly framed. At UPSC or any other contest, essays prove how well planned you are and how well you execute your thoughts. So, you need to write 1000 to 1200 words accurately.

The essay can be written in the following ways-

  1. First, form a plan of your idea

  2. Make sure the flow is smooth

  3. Make sure the reader does not feel disconnected

  4. Make sure you use technical words, not fancy words

  5. Start with a brief history then the information

  6. Focus on statistics

What grades should I expect for the essay?

UPSC never gives 250 for a try. 50% of 250 points is a decent number to score. The highest score a candidate can achieve is 140-160 points.

All my wishes!
